Social Media and politics

April 18, 2012

In South Korea,  the use of Social Media has become the most important part of political strategy. A couple of weeks ago, the election of member for National Assembly was ended. During the election campaign, the individual blogs, Twitter and all portal website were fully mobilized for the election. The supporters for the particular political party started to appeal to the public through Twitter and their personal blogs and they also tried to knock the oppositions off their pedestal with the comment on Social Media. On the other hands, the newspapers and broadcasting didn’t seem to act like the main stream media in that period, but they were led by social media as well. For instance, lots of news about the election campaign on TV and the newspapers were already well-know by public through blogs and Twitter, the priority function of newspaper and TV which are exclusivity and promptness have been lost by social media. Moreover, newspapers and TV have sometimes delivered wrong news to the public because they just copied from the blogs or social network service without verifying it. However, they couldn’t stop delivering news from social media because the news agencies and TV stations were not able to report a huge amount of information during the election campaign period. Thanks to these circumstances, online activists have got a power on political act rather than before and they have played a key role in transforming the condition of political possibilities in Korea as Egyptians who have pioneered forms of political critique and interaction that can mediate and encompass the heterogeneity of religious and social commitments that constitute Egypt’s contemporary political terrain.
